At Parliament`s request, the Ombudsman may be removed by the Court of Justice if he « no longer fulfils the necessary conditions to carry out his duties or if he has committed serious misconduct ». (Article 228 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU) The European Ombudsman was created by the Maastricht Treaty and the first, Jacob Sederman of Finland, was elected by Parliament in 1995. The current Irish mediator, Emily O`Reilly, took office on 1 October 2013.
